The latest from the Foundation

PNM, Wells Fargo, Bradbury Stamm, Larry H. Miller are the latest to sign onto the Horizon Campaign
The Public Service Company of New Mexico recently announced it will donate $50,000 toward literacy projects in Albuquerque Public Schools through the APS Education Foundation’s Horizon Campaign. “The Public Service Company of New Mexico’s commitment to schoolchildren in Albuquerque is nothing new, but we are pleased and grateful that the company is on board with the Horizon Campaign,” said APS Education Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “PNM’s partnership with the Foundation and the district will no doubt help move the bar in education.” The Horizon Campaign, launched in September, is the Foundation’s first-ever attempt to raise $1 million on behalf of district programs. The campaign specifically targets four areas: Fine Arts, Literacy, Middle School/High School Activities and Classroom Teacher Mini-Grants. Three other major sponsors – Intel, Don Chalmers Ford and Sandia National Laboratories – joined the campaign earlier this year. In addition, the Foundation has received a commitment from Wells Fargo Bank, the Larry H. Miller Foundation and respected local builder Bradbury Stamm Construction, as well as the APS Sports Fund. Since announcing the campaign earlier this fall, the Foundation has received nearly a quarter-million dollars in commitments from individuals and businesses in the Albuquerque area. "We know very well that we have a long way to go," said Casaus. "But we're grateful for the community spirit and interest our partners have shown in the Horizon Campaign."

Building the Apple House
RayLee Homes: A New Generation, in partnership with the APS Sports Fund, is building the first-ever “Apple House” – a home that will be constructed and sold to benefit the Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation. The Apple House, still in its planning stages, is scheduled to break ground in the spring of 2010.
“RayLee Homes is excited to embark on this new project in support of our community’s youth,” said Tammy Grady-Thornton of RayLee Homes: A New Generation. “We are grateful to our industry partners for their donations of time and materials in order to make this project as successful as possible.”
RayLee Homes has long been a supporter of APS and the Foundation. The company, established in 1976 by Scott and Laura Grady, is a title sponsor of the APS Celebrity Golf Extravaganza, which raised $58,000 in May to benefit middle school and C-team athletics within the district. The Grady family also has contributed directly to schools, including Corrales Elementary School.
“Some people talk about giving back to their communities, but the Grady family does more than talk,” said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “I believe they help kids in Albuquerque because they genuinely want to be good neighbors in the community. It’s not lip service. For them, it’s action. And we’re very grateful for it.”
The Foundation has just kicked off its inaugural Horizon Campaign, its first attempt to raise $1 million from businesses and private sources. Horizon Campaign funds will largely be directed toward literacy, fine arts, classroom teacher mini-grants and middle school/high school activities within the district.
