School
districts are expected to meet the needs of every student, regardless
of the student’s financial or academic circumstances. In a district as
large and diverse as APS, that can be very challenging. To help address
district’s needs and fill programming gaps, the APS Education
Foundation funds a number of programs including:
- Every summer, the Second Grade Reading Academy provides reading experts who work with young readers who need just a little extra help in order to read at their grade level.
- Over the years, Sandia National Laboratories has funded a
number of innovative programs through the Foundation. In its 7th year, School to World offers
8th and 9th grade students a look into the world of careers and
demonstrates the link between education and future career choices. Family Science Night gets everyone involved with fun and exciting experiments at local elementary schools.
- Escuela de Cinco is a Foundation program that
gives children with late summer birthdays a little head start so they
can begin kindergarten with their friends.
- APS has 3,000 students who don’t have a permanent place to live. The Foundation’s Title I Homeless Project provides resources and a consistent learning environment for kids who have very few consistencies in their young lives.
- Wanting to give something back to their community and their
fans is what led the members of Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio to team up
and fund scholarships for APS students wanting to go on to college.
There are currently 40 students attending college with funds from the Sparx/Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship Fund.
- Every 4th and 5th grader in the district attends the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra thanks to a donor who wanted to share their love of music with children.
This diversity of programs is what the APS Education Foundation is
known for. But the truth is that the only way the Foundation can fund
these and other programs is with the generous support of donors like
you.
At the APS Education Foundation, we believe that every child
deserves to succeed and achieve and that each child represents a
million possibilities.
